ZeminPuan is a non-profit public-awareness platform that translates Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's (İBB) 'Earthquake Potential Loss Estimations Booklet' (June 2020) into an interactive neighborhood-level risk map. Covering 39 districts and ~971 neighborhoods, the platform visualizes building damage distribution, estimated casualties, temporary shelter needs, soil class (NEHRP) and Vs30 values for a 7.5 Mw Marmara earthquake scenario.
İBB's loss estimation reports exist as hundreds of pages of static PDF tables — inaccessible to the average citizen who simply wants to understand the risk of their own neighborhood. Raw numbers like casualty counts, building damage ratios, soil class and Vs30 values are meaningless without context. The challenge was to turn dense seismic data into a 10-second answer: 'How risky is my neighborhood, and what does that actually mean for me and my building?'
We designed and shipped a lightweight, SEO-friendly Next.js platform with a MapLibre-based vector map (OpenFreeMap tiles). Neighborhoods are coloured by a composite risk score combining soil quality, building damage ratio, casualty density and infrastructure damage — bucketed into LOW / MEDIUM / HIGH / VERY HIGH categories. A 3-step 'search → result card → share' flow keeps the experience under 10 seconds; the result card exposes damage bars, casualty estimates, shelter needs and soil data with tooltips that translate technical terms into plain language. A KVKK-compliant legal page, cookie-free analytics (Vercel Analytics) and WhatsApp / X sharing close the loop.
ZeminPuan turns a 100+ page municipal report into a 10-second neighborhood lookup. Users can search by neighborhood or district, click on the map, and instantly see how a 7.5 Mw Marmara scenario would affect their street — along with a clear disclaimer that a good building on bad soil can still be safer than a bad building on good soil. The platform is carrying earthquake-preparedness messaging into conversations it would never have reached as a PDF.
ZeminPuan data is provided strictly for public awareness and does not replace an official soil survey, engineering report or risk assessment. Neighborhood-level statistics do not reflect any individual building — a poorly built structure on good soil can be more dangerous than a sound building on poor soil. For definitive evaluations, consult AFAD, İBB and certified engineering firms.
